More information about Droitwich

Introduction

Droitwich is a small market town in the central part of the county of Worcestershire, England. It lies on the River Salwarpe and has a population of just over 21,000 people. It has a rich history and is considered to be one of the oldest continuously populated settlements in Britain. Droitwich is the birthplace of several famous automotive, finance and motorsport personalities. Though small in size, the town has a influence that extends beyond its boundaries. It is known for its contribution to the automotive industry, finance industry, and motorsport.

A Brief History of Droitwich

The settlement of Droitwich dates back to Roman times and was mentioned in the annals of the 4th century BCE. The name, which possibly means 'the place of the droit', was originally given to the settlement because of its setting in a loop of the Salwarpe river. In feudal times, the manor was held by the Counts of Evesham, and later became a Royal Manor during the time of Edward the Confessor. During the reign of William the Conqueror, Droitwich was part of the vast estates of Roger de Montgomerie. The Norman lord also constructed the local castle and parish churches.

By the late Middle Ages, Droitwich had become an important trading centre and it emerged as the hub of the local leather and woollen cloth industry. Droitwich Spa grew out of this period with the development of a brine spring and increased commercial activity. In the 19th century, the spa industry sustained the town's growth and the Great Western Railway loop that passed through the town extended its influence.

Droitwich's Connections to the Automotive Industry

Droitwich has a long and distinguished history in the automotive industry. The first motor car to be built in the town was a 3-wheeler flat-twin tricycle camper called 'The Anglo-Droit' car. Designed and built by the firm of Moxon and Goddard, it was the first motor car to be built in the area and was put on show to the public in 1905.

The town went on to become the home of several automobile companies in the early part of the 20th century. The Camden Automobiles Co. was the first to start production in the town, producing cars until 1924. Other companies such as Surrey Autocar, Wellworthy Motors and South Midland Motors all established factories in the town throughout the post-war period and provided many job opportunities for the local workforce.

Sadly, with the eventual decline of the British motor industry, the last of these factories closed its doors in 1969. However, the town still retains some automotive heritage with the Droitwich Auto-Sales Centre, a large car superstore with a showroom and garage, the Droitwich Classic Car Club, and the annual Classic Car Show, held in Priory Park.

Droitwich's Links to the Finance Industry

Droitwich also has a strong connection to the world of finance. The town was once home to Barclays Bank, which was established in the 1950s and served the local residents with its services until 2011. The building is now home to an independent estate agency and residential lettings firm, while Barclays still operate a number of ATMs around the town.

Droitwich is also the birthplace of Henry Palmer, a prominent British banker and financier who was knighted in 1910 for his services to banking. Palmer made his fortune as a stockbroker, gold bullion dealer and banker, and helped found what is now Barclays Bank. His fierce ambition to succeed and develop banking made him a household name in the county, and is remembered as one of the most influential figures of his time.

Droitwich's Connections to Motorsport

Despite its size and population, Droitwich has a major connection to motorsport, owing to the success of its residents both as drivers and professionals in the field.

The most famous motorsport personality to emerge from the town is Clay Regazzoni, the Swiss Formula One driver who won five Grand Prix races and scored numerous podium finishes during the course of his career. Regazzoni began his motorsport career in Droitwich, where he grew up in a family of Italian migrs before going on to race for Ferrari, Williams, Ensign and BRM in Formula One.

Besides Regazzoni, Droitwich has also bred other prominent motorsport figures such as Roger Green, the designer of the BRM Mk2, and John Watson, the Formula One driver who was offered a seat with BMW Motorsport after being spotted during a race in Droitwich.

Demographics

As of the 2011 Census, Droitwich has a population of 21,832 people, a significant portion of which are employed in the motor industry and financial services. The town is 88.6% White British, with the largest minority ethnic group being Asian British at 4.6%. The median age of residents is 44, and the median weekly household income is £671.

Conclusion

Though small in size, Droitwich is a thriving market town with a history stretching back to Roman times. Despite its size, it has had a major influence on the automotive industry, finance industry and motorsport, producing a number of successful personalities. Today, the town is largely employed in the motor industry and financial services, and remains an important source of employment in the county of Worcestershire.
