More information about Driffield

Driffield is a small satchel town situated in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Often referred to as 'The Capital of the Yorkshire Wolds', it is a busy little market town surrounded by open fields and rolling hills. Driffield's population of almost 6000 residents makes it an ideal destination for those looking for a quiet yet vibrant town.

The town is perhaps most famous for its connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsports. Driffield has always had a strong connection to the motoring industry, with records dating back to the early 1900's of production cars being sold here. The first of its kind was the Jewill's Anglia, produced by the Driffield Car Company, started in 1905 by local entrepreneur, T. W. Elliott. The car, powered by a single cylinder three-and-a-half horsepower JAP engine, made Driffield the first town in Europe to make and sell an automobile.

The area also holds a special place in the history of motorsport. In the early 1940s, the Driffield Racing car Company was founded by brothers George and Phil West, and their dedicated team of mechanics and engineers. They made fast, reliable racing cars that were well-suited for the bumpy Yorkshire terrain. The Wests gained a reputation for producing reliable and fast race cars, and eventually, the brothers entered world-level racing events in the 1950s. Their best known achievement was claiming second place in the Formula 1 British Grand Prix of the same year.

There is also a long-standing tradition of finance in Driffield. The town was once known as 'little London' due to the wealth of banking and fund management institutions around it. Andrew Burdon, a local 'man of finance', was responsible for the establishment of the Driffield Banking and Building society in 1846, which later merged with The Bank of Northern York. The firm went on to become one of the leading banks in the area, with branches in Beverley, Market Weighton, Pocklington and Whitby.

In recent years, Driffield has seen a resurgence in popularity. Young professionals are drawn to the town for its close proximity to two cities, Leeds and York, as well as for its wonderful rural setting. Despite its small size, Driffield provides quality housing, good schools and a pleasing retail district. With its vibrant culture, leisure activities and a vast selection of shops and pubs, Driffield is also a popular tourist destination.

As of the 2011 census, Driffield's population was estimated to be 5,897, with 87.73% white British nationals, 8.47% mixed race and 2.27% Asian. According to the 2011 census, there were 2884 people aged 18 to 74 working in the town and the predominant age group was aged 65 and over, making up 27.9% of the population.

Driffield is a charming town with a proud history of producing cars, finance and motorsports. It has a solid foundation of industry, leisure and culture and is a fantastic place to live, work and explore. With its laid-back atmosphere, beautiful landscapes and welcoming community, Driffield has proved itself to be a special place in many different ways.
