More information about Cullompton

Located in East Devon on the River Culm, Cullompton is an ancient market town located in the southwest of England. It has a population of 10,837 people according to the latest census, having grown steadily since 1801 when the population was just 1,213. It is known locally as Cully or Cully Town and its history dates back hundreds of years.

Originally settled in Saxon times, Cullompton developed rapidly from the 11th century onwards, due in part to its location at the eastern end of the Fosse Way Roman road connecting Exeter and Lincoln. It grew further in the mid-19th century, becoming an important centre of local trade and commerce. Its landmarks include St Andrews Church and the Elizabethan Manor House, which were both built in the 16th century.

The town is famous for its historic links to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. These industries have played a major role in the economy throughout the history of Cullompton.

Car Industry

The town of Cully is often associated with the pioneering automotive industry of the early 20th century. In 1902, the first automobile factory in the United Kingdom was opened at the Sonthan Works in Cullompton. It was created by the Percival Motor Company, whose 18hp steam car was a popular vehicle for over a decade.

The factory eventually closed in 1932, but the town has a proud history of auto manufacturing. The first commercial car produced in the United Kingdom was the Fosse Flyer, which was created at the Percival Motor Company's original workshop, located in Cullompton.

Since the passing of time, the town's car industry has dwindled in size. However, Cully remains an important centre for garages, workshops, and car dealerships, which serve the surrounding towns and villages.

Finance Industry

Cullompton is also strongly connected to the modern finance industry. The National Westminster Bank (now NatWest) was founded on North Street in the early 1900s. This was NatWest's first successful bank in England, and it later became one of the 'big four' high-street banks. The building that housed the original NatWest is now home to the Cullompton Historical Society and Museum.

The town is also connected to other major names in the finance sector. The Royal Bank of Scotland opened a branch in the high street in 1872, and the town hosted a branch of the Midland Bank from 1891. Today, Cullompton is home to a number of investment banks, international money transfer services, and other companies related to the finance sector.

Motorsport

The records for motorsport in the United Kingdom trace back to a group of racers who raced in a competition called the Crazy Race in May 1897, which included a section of a circular course constructed outside of Cullompton. This race is considered to be the first ever organised automobile race in Britain.

The modern-day Cullompton is still home to some motorsport activities. The South West Motor Racing Club use a club circuit located at the Western Speedbowl, just south of the town centre. This circuit has been host to a range of events, from junior karting to production car racing.

Conclusion

Cullompton is a small town with a long and rich history. It has strong connections to the automotive industry, finance industry, and motorsport, which have all played a part in contributing to the economy and character of the town over the years.
