More information about Croydon

Croydon is a large town located in the London Borough of Croydon, in the South East of England. It is home to some 366,600 inhabitants, according to the 2017 census, making it the largest town in the borough and the ninth largest in the UK. It is the main road and rail hub of the south east, with excellent connections to the centre of London.

This corner of south London has been a centre of industry for centuries and is still an important hub for trade today. It has strong connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. It also has a diverse range of demographic groups, with people from a variety of backgrounds, religions, cultures and professions.

Car Industry — Croydon has a long association with the car industry. It is home to one of the oldest car dealerships in the UK, Arnold-Clark, which traces its roots back to 1905. This significant link with the car industry has continued through the ages with various car manufacturing plants, as well as several car dealerships and garages. The community college also offers courses and qualifications in motor vehicle maintenance, allowing local youngsters to learn the skills they need to join the motor trade.

Finance Industry — In recent decades, there has been an increasing emphasis on the finance industry in the Croydon area. With the establishment of the trams and the £2 billion Westfield and Hammerson shopping centre development, the area has become a desirable place to live, dealing directly and indirectly with the finance industry in many varied ways. This includes banking, investment, accountancy, wills and much more. A number of banks and other financial institutions also have strong links to the area.

Motorsport — The transport infrastructure in Croydon makes it a great venue for motorsports events. Locally organised races, such as the Croydon Racing Club, are held at the local Longhedge Raceway, situated just outside of the town. The circuit is set in a former quarry and is one of the most popular tracks in the south east for car and bike racing. There are also a number of other, less established, motorsport clubs in the area such as the Kings Cross Motorcycle Club and the Croydon Motorcycle Club which provide a great way for motorsport enthusiasts to take part in the action.

Demographics — Croydon is a culturally diverse town with a wide range of demographic groups. Over half of the population is made up of ethnic minorities, with black and Asian being the most prominent, followed by white British. The average age of the population is 37, with just under half aged between 25-44 and just over a quarter aged 45 and over. The predominant religion is Christianity, followed by Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and other faiths. In terms of language, English is the most widely spoken, but there are a number of other languages such as Polish, Punjabi and Urdu.

Croydon is a thriving, diverse and inclusive town with a long history of ties to a range of industries from transportation to finance and motorsport. The demographics in the area are changing, but it remains a major hub for business in the south east of England.
