Coulsdon: A Respected Borough with Connections to the Car, Finance and Motorsport Industries

Located in the London Borough of Croydon, Coulsdon is a respected residential and commercial area with a unique connection to the motor, finance and motorsport industries. With a population of over 22,000, Coulsdon is home to a number of affluent residents and businesses, contributing to the rich history and economy of the region.

History of Coulsdon

Coulsdon is believed to have been first populated during the Bronze and Iron Ages, due to the presence of archaeological remains in and around the area. During the medieval period, Coulsdon was known as Colesdun, derived from the Old English words meaning 'Col's Hill'. In 1617, the manor of Coulsdon was bought by wealthy yeoman farmer George Walrond, and it remained in his family's ownership until 1806.

During the 19th century, Coulsdon saw a number of modifications with the construction of the Coulsdon and Cuddington Golf Course and its direct association with the railway network. In 1928, the golf course was sold to Ernest Butlin and converted into the Butlin's Holiday Camp. The camp was operational from 1933 to 1988 but was later demolished to make way for a new housing development.

Today, Coulsdon is identified as a largely suburban settlement, situated approximately 11.3 miles south-southeast of Charing Cross. As of 2019, the estimated population of Coulsdon was 22,138, of which 54.8% were of working age, while 29.9% were aged between 65 and 84. The vast majority of Coulsdon's population identified as White British (92.7%), followed by Other White (4.9%) and Mixed (1.7%).

For many centuries, Coulsdon has served as a hub of activity for the motor, finance and motorsport industries. Influential entrepreneurs, such as William Doxford and Sons, have long been associated with the area and have had a significant impact on its success.

William Doxford and Sons originated from the nearby village of Smitham, and was founded in the late 19th century. By 1905, the company had developed one of the first true mass production systems, eventually becoming a leading supplier of vehicle components to the automotive industry. The company became known as Doxford Automotive and continued to operate out of its facility in Coulsdon until its closure in 1989.

In addition to its connections to the automotive industry, Coulsdon has also been associated with financial services and motorsport. Numerous financial institutions have been established within the borough and many motorsport events have been held at the Coulsdon and Chipstead Motor Racing Circuit.

The circuit originally opened in 1948 as the Chipstead Motor Racing Circuit, before becoming known as Coulsdon in the mid-1960s. The circuit tragically closed in 1969 after a fatal crash occurred during a race, but it saw a brief revival in 1986 when an extension to the site was approved. However, this extension faced numerous protests and was eventually abandoned a year later.
