Chislehurst is perhaps best known for its strong connections to the car industry, finance industry, and motorsport. The town has an interesting history and, over the centuries, has seen many changes, from its rural roots to its current cosmopolitan and contemporary status. Car Industry

Chislehurst is well known for its car industry connections. The Chislehurst Motor Works was founded in 1891 and made carriages and cars parts. The company was a major success, and by the 1910s they had a 7,000 square feet offices, shop and workshops in Chislehurst. In 1916, they began to produce cars, including the highly successful and popular Model E of 1921.

The company went bankrupt in 1922, closing down in 1927. While the car industry in Chislehurst closed down, its legacy had a lasting impact. The Chislehurst Motor Racing Club (CMRC) was very successful and attracted many famous drivers, such as Stewart Wilson, Barry Sheene, Martin Brodie and Jim Clark. In 1970, to commemorate their success, CMRC decided to open a racetrack in Chislehurst, known as the Chislehurst Motor Racing Circuit (CMRC). This track has now become a major racing circuit, hosting the British Superbike Championship and other race events.
