More information about Burntwood

Introduction Burntwood is a small town situated in Staffordshire, England, about 40 miles from Birmingham — the city of a thousand trades and home of the world-renowned car industry. The area itself has an interesting history, having been an industrial area as early as the 19th century, producing industrial staples such as coal and bricks, as well as being a hub of several railway lines. Its location makes it an ideal site for manufacturing, which it has done throughout its history, but the area is perhaps best known for its connections to the car industry, the finance industry, and motorsport. In this article, we will explore these connections in greater detail.

Burntwood & The Car Industry The traditional origins of the car industry in Birmingham are well known, with Morris, Austin and Swallow all 3 having factories in the city — making the area a key player in the history of British motor car production. However, Burntwood also played host to several car industry plants, with the most well known being British Leyland; they had a large factory situated there in 1970 which produced the Morris or Mini Minor.

The factory was built on a site vacated by the Smiths Group, in an attempt to reduce the production costs and make the area more attractive for business. Unfortunately, their presence in the town only lasted for a short time, as the company closed the factory just 4 years after it opened. On the bright side, this provided more space for other companies to move in, and Burntwood became known as a small but active centre for the car industry.

Other companies with connections to the car industry have since moved into the area, with both Rolls-Royce and Honda currently having plants in and around the town. Rolls-Royce in particular has a manufacturing plant just on the outskirts of Burntwood, which they opened in 1997.

Burntwood & The Finance Industry As well as being home to several car industry plants, Burntwood is also becoming an area known for its finance industry, with several financial institutions being based in the town. The most prominent of these is NatWest Bank, who opened a branch on the main street of Burntwood in 1995, which was followed by a similar move by Halifax a few years later, which is now one of the largest banking chains in the UK. These institutions have provided a massive boost to the local economy, with banking staff and customers all investing in the local business community, creating a vibrant and thriving area of commerce.

Burntwood & Motorsport Burntwood is highly regarded for its motorsport community, having had a strong presence throughout its history. The most famous of these being the famous Silverstone Racecourse, which is less than 20 miles from the town. Silverstone has hosted some of the most famous events in motorsport, and is home to the iconic British Grand Prix.

The town is also connected to the world of motorsport through its residents, with F1 legend Nigel Mansell having grown up there, and living nearby in semi-retirement (Mansell's family still live in the area). This enables a direct connection to the world of motorsport to exist in Burntwood, and gives the local area a sense of connection to the elite level of racing.

Demographics Burntwood's population stands currently at around 15,500, making it one of the smaller towns in Staffordshire and one of the quieter parts of the UK. The area is predominantly white, with 96.6% of residents being of white British ethnicity, meaning it's classed as one of the least diverse towns in the county.

Conclusion As you can see, Burntwood is a small but vibrant area that has strong links with the car and finance industry, as well as motorsport. The area has a diverse history, and is a great place to live, with a strong local economy and plenty of attractions to explore. It's clear to see why Burntwood has become such an important area, and why so many people call it home.
