More information about Burntisland

Burntisland, located eight miles north-west of Edinburgh, is a Royal Burgh located in Fife, Scotland. It is known as the birthplace of motor racing and the birthplace of the car industry.

Burntisland, a small town with a population of just over 5,000 people according to the 2011 census, is a major transport hub with a railway station and ferry port that link the Fife Coast and Forth Bridge to Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the Highlands. The town, situated on the north bank of the Firth of Forth and surrounded by picturesque hills, has seen a growing resurgence in recent years, with boutiques and businesses slowly moving into the town, and the number of visitors each year increasing.

The town is most famous for its connection to the car industry and local motorsport, with the Burntisland Racing Club (BRC) being the oldest and most successful car racing club in Scotland.

Founded in 1903, the BRC has a long and proud history, having hosted the world's first ever car race during 1903's 'Burntisland Grand Prix'. The club is responsible for the motor racing that takes place on the local circuit, Burntisland Raceway, as well as other circuits in the United Kingdom, Europe and on occasion, the United States. It is also proud to be the home of the Fife Autosport Club, which was founded in 1967.

The Burntisland Historical Motorsport Museum, located in the former Burntisland Town Hall, is a must-see attraction for car enthusiasts, with a large collection of vintage motor vehicles, memorabilia and books. The museum also houses a comprehensive archive chronicling the history of motor racing in Scotland.

The car industry that is linked to Burntisland is significant. The Jaguar Car Company — now part of the Tata Motors Group — opened a factory in Burntisland in 1957 and closed it down in 1972. The plant built the Jaguar E-Type, as well as other luxury models. The Jaguar factory is now home to the National Museum of Luxury Cars.

The town was thrown into the international spotlight in 2001 when the town's financial services sector saw the launch of the Financial Services Authority (FSA) in Scotland, the first and only Scottish body of its kind. At the time, the FSA was responsible for the regulation of the financial services industry in Scotland, a process that today is regulated by HM Treasury. With the FSA now being headquartered in Edinburgh, Burntisland remains an important part in the regulation of Scotland's financial services industry.

The area is also home to many local businesses and shops, with most of them situated around the main street of High Street. Visitors to the town can enjoy the many pubs, restaurants, cafs and other shops, including an art gallery, which was recently opened in 2016. There is also a recently renovated leisure centre that features a swimming pool, gym and a sports centre.

Of course, there is also plenty to do outdoors in and around Burntisland, from hillwalking to surfing. The path on the top of Kearn Hill is a great place to take in the views of the river, with the Tay rail bridge visible in the distance. Nature lovers can explore the nearby Limekilns woods, where there are many walks to discover. The nearby Kinghorn Loch is great for fishing, and the beach is a popular spot for beachcombing.

All in all, Burntisland is a great place to visit, with lots of local attractions and amenities. With a rich history in the car industry, finance industry and motorsport, Burntisland is a great place to explore and learn about Scotland's past and present.
