Burford — A Bustling East Oxfordshire Town with a Vibrant Industrial History

Located in the rolling countryside of East Oxfordshire, Burford is well known for its picturesque streets, historic buildings, and traditional English market square. The town, which has a population of over 3,000, is home to a variety of pubs, restaurants, galleries, and shops and it has become a popular tourist destination due to its charming atmosphere and convenient proximity to other popular tourist destinations. However, Burford has much more to offer than just its quaint beauty — the town has a rich history of associations with the automobile, financial, and motorsport industries.

A Hint of the Car Industry

Although it may be difficult to imagine in such a small town, Burford has been deeply linked to the car industry since its establishment. In fact, Burford's association with automobiles can be traced all the way back to 1913 when automotive pioneer William Morris moved to the area and set up his new base of operations. Drawing on the nearby village of Witney's historical expertise in textile manufacturing, Morris established the first factory of his car manufacturing company, Morris Motors, on the outskirts of Burford.

The Morris factory quickly became a bustling hub of activity, producing cars for the British market. At its peak, it employed around 2,000 people who formed an important part of the Burford workforce and helped to create an atmosphere of progress and progressivism which remains in the town to this day. The factory itself has since been closed and converted, but reminders of Burford's car industry history can still be seen in the town centre and surrounding areas.

Burford's Banking History

As well as being home to the car industry, Burford has also seen its fair share of financial activity over the years. Burford's current bank - Cornwall Bank - can trace its roots back to 1859 when the local Cornish and Devon Bank opened its doors in the town.

Throughout the years, the bank has been passed down through generations, changing its name over time and serving as a vital hub for the local community. Today, Cornwall Bank is still owned and operated by the same family, offering banking services to the local people and small businesses.

Burford - Home of Motorsports

As well as banking and industry, Burford has also gained a reputation for being an important centre for motorsports. The small town is home to two major motorsport facilities, which attract spectators and racing fans from around the world and provide the perfect atmosphere for budding and experienced competitors alike.

The first of these facilities is the popular Burford Racecourse, which was established back in 1966 and has since become one of the most popular race venues in the country. The racecourse hosts a variety of events, including National Hunt and Flat races, as well as International Formula 1.

The second motorsport centre, which is located just outside of Burford, is the famed Concorde Motorsports Park. Founded in 1997, this motorsport complex offers visitors the chance to experience a variety of different motorsport ranging from rally, drag racing, and truck racing, to motocross and superbike racing. Concord Motorsports Park also hosts some prestigious events, such as the British Superbike Championship, which attracts fans and professional racers from all over the world.
