Bromley is a large district and town located in the South East of England, in the borough of Bromley, part of the Greater London Area. It is located just 15 miles from the centre of London, and has a population of around 370,000 people. The town has long been associated with the car industry, finance industry and motorsport, having once been home to a well-known vehicle manufacturing plant.

History

The history of Bromley dates back to 973 AD when the town's first known reference was made in a charter of Edward the Confessor. The area has been continually occupied since then and grew throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, with many grand houses built during this time.

In the 20th century, Europe's largest vehicle manufacturing plant was opened in Bromley. This was the first of its kind, and the plant was responsible for producing military vehicles and commercial cars for the likes of Morris, Austin, Wolseley and Riley. This made Bromley a popular destination for workers in the motor industry, and the town's population increased significantly as a result.

Nowadays, Bromley is a popular destination for business people and tourists alike. Whilst still retaining its important connections to the car industry, the town is now a hub for the financial services industry and is home to a number of large banking and finance companies.

Demographics

Bromley is a diverse area, with a population that is made up of a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Around 37% of the population are of White British decent, while 28% are of Asian ethnicity and 16% are of Black/African/Caribbean heritage. Around 8% or the population is also of mixed ethnicity.

The town is largely populated by younger people. Around 60% of the population are under the age of 35, with 23% of this being under the age of 15. The median age of the population is 29 and the town is made up of 51% male and 49% female.

Bromley has a long history with the car industry. As previously mentioned, the district was once home to Europe's largest vehicle manufacturing plant, producing cars for several of the UK's major car manufacturers. The plant, which closed in 1987, has now been converted into a museum known as the Greenwich Heritage Centre and Museum. The museum is open to the public and provides an insight into how the plant used to function and produce some of the nations most iconic vehicles.
