Bordon has been a centre for the car industry for many years, having been established during the Second World War as part of a secret Government project to develop an armoured car for the war effort. Initially set up as a branch of Daimler-Benz, the production was eventually taken over by the British firm, Harland & Wolff, who developed the large-scale production of small armoured cars.

The production of the armoured car was later replaced by a different type of car — the Rover-type vehicle. Throughout the second half of the 20th century, Bordon was widely regarded as one of the leading centres of production for this type of car, with the car industry going on to become one of the town's main sources of employment. This was particularly true in the early 1990s, when an estimated 6,000 people were employed in the car manufacturing industry in Bordon.

It was one of the first towns in the UK to set up a local stock exchange, and its financial sector continues to be one of the town's main sources of employment, with thousands of jobs being created over the years in the stockbroking and banking sectors.
