A Brief History of Bonnyrigg

Though Bonnyrigg's early history is somewhat shrouded in mystery, it was most likely first settled during the Iron Age, with its name coming from the old Scottish term for 'town at the foot of a hill'. Up until the 16th century, Bonnyrigg was mostly rural, home to mainly small farming communities, but began to experience more development as the nearby cities of Edinburgh, Galashiels, and Hawick all grew.

By the 19th century, Bonnyrigg's population had grown to more than 5,000 people, and many of the new residents were skilled craftsmen who had moved there to take advantage of the flourishing wool industry. In fact, a number of different factories had sprung up in the town and it soon became known for its carpets and blankets.

In the 20th century, Bonnyrigg's economy grew even more, thanks in part to the establishment of a coal mine in the nearby village of Whitehill. This also meant that the town became well known for its coal miners, as well as its miners' daughters who worked as washerwomen. However, by the 1960s, the coal industry had all but disappeared and Bonnyrigg went into a long period of economic decline.

In recent years however, Bonnyrigg has experienced a resurgence of sorts, thanks in large part to its newfound links to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport.
