Introduction

Bedlington is a historic town in Northumberland, an administrative county in the North East of England. A former mining town with a rich industrial heritage, Bedlington is proud to be the birthplace of several famous entrepreneurs, carmakers, financiers and motorsport champions. Over the centuries Bedlington has established strong links with the car industry, finance industry and motorsport, and today the town continues to be an important hub for business and the economy in the North East region.

The Car Industry

The history of the automotive industry in Bedlington began in 1893 when the first successful car to complete the Paris-Vienna race, the De Dion-Bouton, was constructed by L�on Serpollet and Edouard Bouton in the former mining village of Bedlington. This was closely followed by the production of the Argyll Motors in 1899. The Argylls were renowned for their powerful engines, luxurious interiors, and the improvements in speed and performance they brought to car production at the time.

In the early 20th century, car manufacturing in Bedlington was further bolstered by the opening of several car factories, such as the British Salmson Automotive Company, Tudor Motors and British Villiers Motors, all of which produced a variety of cars for the local market. Tudor Motors, in particular, is still remembered for its popular Norton Esquire saloon car, which was made from 1950 to 1955.

Around this time, Bedlington was also home to the famous Speed Sport Racing Workshop, a popular domestic and international venue for racing cars and motorbikes. Famous names such as Don Parkinson, Alan Bristow, Mike Hailwood and Graham Hill were all associated with this workshop, and it was here that many of the advances in engine technology and racing techniques were tested and developed.

The Finance Industry

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Bedlington was a hub of activity for the finance industry, home to several leading banks and financial institutions. One of the earliest was the British Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) which was founded in 1969 by local entrepreneurs Mohammed Jaffar and Qayyuumullah Qadir. This bank quickly gained a reputation as a trusted provider of banking and financial services, and it was here that the local Bedlington community found much of their financial support.

The town was also home to one of the first national mutual savings and loan institutions in the UK, the Bedlington Savings Bank, which was founded in 1845. This bank provided low-cost savings opportunities to the local people, enabling them to deposit their funds and withdraw them as necessary. It eventually merged with the United Counties Bank in 1967 and became the Midland Bank.

The Midland Bank continued to operate in Bedlington until it was taken over by Lloyds Bank in 1992. This marked the end of an era for the finance industry in the town, but it also opened up new opportunities as the town became a centre of expertise on financial services.

Motorsport

Motorsport first came to Bedlington in the late 1800s, when the first Bedlington Race Track was established. This fast speedway track quickly became a major destination for racing enthusiasts from all over the UK, and it was at this track that Graham Hill won the British Grand Prix in 1965.

Today, the town continues to be an important hub for motorsport in the North East. The annual Northumberland Motor Club Rally and Hillclimb is held each summer, drawing competitors from all over the UK and beyond. The Club also organises regular meetings and track days, in addition to running the Scottish Championship Motorsport School, which offers young drivers the chance to learn the ropes of motorsport.

According to the 2011 Census, Bedlington's population stood at 8,635 people. Of these, 44.6% were male and 55.4% were female, and the majority of the population (87%) identified as White British. The median age of the population was 39.9 years, with 15.2% of the population under 18, 36.3% between 18 and 39, 28.3% between 40 and 59, and 20.2% aged over 60.
