More information about Atherstone

Introduction

Atherstone is a small town in Warwickshire in the United Kingdom which, at first, appears to have no relation to the car industry, finance industry or motorsport. This, however, is not the case. Despite its relatively small population, Atherstone has strong connections to each of these industries and has made a significant global impact.

History of Atherstone

The town's first recorded mention came in 946 AD in a charter of land ownership near the River Anker. The area quickly developed into an industrial town with a coal mine, metal works, engineering works and silicework, among other institutions. Its association with the car industry dates back to the late 19th century when the local coal mine was being used to power a number of factories, including a crankshaft manufacturer known as the Atherstone Motor Company.

In the early 20th century, Atherstone experienced rapid growth, particularly when the local wool trade was booming. This led to a significant increase in the population of the town, a trend which continued into the later decades of the century when Atherstone had a total population of over 11,000 people.

Car Industry

Atherstone is strongly associated with the car industry and has made a lasting contribution to the sector. The town has a long history of motor manufacturing and was the home of the Atherstone Motor Company, a crankshaft manufacturing firm founded in 1889. This firm went on to become one of the largest suppliers of car engine components in the world and supplied parts for the production of cars such as the Rolls Royce, the Chrysler, and the Volkswagen Beetle.

In addition to this, the town has also recently become home to a number of start-ups and research centres dedicated to the car industry. Atherstone has become a hub for the testing and development of electric vehicles and new self-driving technologies as well as a centre for the production of connected car systems. This has seen a number of major manufacturers, such as Ford and BMW, invest in the local area.

Finance Industry

The financial industry has also had a presence in Atherstone for many decades and this has been enhanced by the recent growth in the car and motorsport sectors. A number of larger national and international companies have based a significant presence in the town and this has seen a steady rise in the number of skilled financial and professional services in the area.

Additionally, Atherstone also hosts a number of smaller, local financial start-ups, many of which focus on the automotive and motorsport industries. These start-ups provide various services such as marketing, branding, accounting and advisory services which have allowed them to provide valuable support to motor firms and more traditional financial institutions.

Motorsport

Atherstone has had a long-standing relationship with motorsport, stretching back to the 1950s when local enthusiasts were using the town's roads to host unofficial races, displaying their racing skills over the weekend. This eventually led to a number of local race tracks, including the Atherstone Racecourse, the Atherstone Motorsport Track and the Atherstone Speedway.

The town is also home to the Atherstone Grand Prix, a popular annual event which is attended by both professional and amateur drivers from all over the world. This race sees competitors drive on a 2km circuit located in the town and it attracts a large crowd of spectators every year.

Demographics

As of the 2020 record, Atherstone had an estimated population of 11,099. The town is predominantly white, with over 90% of the population being from a white British background. The other main ethnic backgrounds represented are Indian, Pakistani and Chinese. Atherstone is also home to several religions, with a significant proportion of the population being Christian.

Conclusion

Atherstone is a small town which, despite its size, has a significant and varied presence in the UK's car industry, finance industry and motorsport. From the Atherstone Motor Company to the annual Grand Prix, Atherstone has a longstanding relationship with each of these sectors and its contributions have had global impact.
