More information about Yeovil

Yeovil, a town within Somerset, South West England, has become well known for its economic activity, particularly within the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. Located a mere 130 miles away from London, Yeovil is home to 113,497 people according to the 2011 census[1], and as a relatively small town of South West England, it holds a plethora of cultural significance, as well as an array of skilled labour, rendering it both an educational and an industrial hub.

The history of Yeovil has always been inextricably linked with that of its automotive industry, both of which were given a significant boost in the 1960s when the town was largely transformed from a rural, agrarian community into an industrial centre. This transformation was largely due to the arrival of the Midlands based-car manufacturer, Rootes Group, who began their operations in the early 1960s. Since arriving in the town, Rootes Group established the Westlands Manufacturing base as a site for their production and assembly plant and soon began to employ up to 7,000 people to assist in the production of various vehicles, predominantly that of commercial vans and lorries. The firm closed operations in 1979, resulting in a significant loss of employment opportunities in the town.

Despite this, Yeovil had already secured a reputation within the automotive industry, with its proved skilled labour, and the car manufacturing industry has since benefited significantly from its presence in the town. New employment opportunities have since arisen within Yeovil in the forms of finance and motorsport industries, both of which have strengthened the economy in and around the South West of England.

The finance industry has been fundamental to the success of many businesses, who require access to finance for their projects. In Yeovil, one of the largest employers has been Bank of America, who is the principle financer of both large-scale and small-scale projects and start-up businesses. This company has provided up to 5,000 jobs in the Yeovil area alone[2], and has been successful in securing funding for small businesses, as well as providing access to financial services and advice to its customers.

Meanwhile, motorsport is quite a significant part of the culture in and around Yeovil, with events and tracks being established in the nearby cities of Castle Combe and Thruxton. In particular, Castle Combe Circuit is one of the oldest in Britain and has been used frequently for a wide range of motorsport events. It has been used regularly in recent years for British Touring Car Championship, British Superbike Championships and the UK Formula Renault Championships.

Yeovil has become renowned as a hub for the car, finance and motorsport industries, however, the town's economy is mainly dependent on its young population, who are finding it increasingly difficult to find suitable employment opportunities in the current economy. Hence, many of the young people of Yeovil oftentimes look for work outside of their hometown in larger cities such as Bristol and London, meaning that the flow of labour which had been so crucial for the town's success in the past is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.

Hence, for the town of Yeovil to be sustainable, it is important to remember the importance of the car, finance and motorsport industries which the town is so heavily reliant on. If the town is unable to provide suitable opportunities for its youth and cannot sustain its own economy, then it runs the risk of becoming a shadow of its former self and being a victim to economic depreciation.
