More information about Wirral

Wirral is an area located on the Wirral Peninsula, on the opposite side of the River Mersey to the English city of Liverpool. It is one of the six metropolitan boroughs of the larger region known as Merseyside, located in North West England. With a population of approximately 320,000 people occupying an area of 60 square miles, it is a highly sought after location, with communities, businesses and attractions appealing to Middle England and beyond.

The area was historically known for its shipbuilding industry and in recent years, has come under the control of the local authorities, who have encouraged economic and social investments in ambitious developments such as the Wirral Waters Regeneration Project; a multi-million pound scheme to enhance the leisure facilities, transport systems and offices surrounding the docks. With much of the area now being classed as a Grade 1 listed conservation area, many of its original industries including the car and boats industry have returned, making the Wirral a prime spot for the car, finance and motorsport industries.

Wirral's car industry has a long and varied history, from the first car manufacturer in the region, Cox and Co. at Wallasey in 1891, to the more modern additions of automotive dealerships that stock a range of new and used vehicles. For motorsport fans, the Wirral is home to the Wallasey and Wirral Motor Club, one of the oldest motorsport clubs in the country. The club hosts a number of events every year, including the Birkenhead Park Rally, a single stage rally which is held at Birkenhead Park, a Grade II listed public park located near the centre of the Wirral.

The growing financial sector of the Wirral is driven largely by its close proximity to the commercial centre of Liverpool. The region incorporates the boroughs of Birkenhead and Wallasey, and was recently ranked by the Centre for Cities as one of the fastest growing businesses districts outside of London. Its businesses range from global financial services, to more locally based independent financial advisors.

The Wirral also has one of the most highly educated populations in the UK, and over 23% of its population hold graduate-level and equivalent qualifications. This means the area attracts large numbers of high-salaried professionals, such as financiers, who are drawn to the area's quality of life and lower cost of living compared to other parts of the UK.

Due to the fact the Wirral is surrounded by the River Mersey, there has been significant investment in new transport links. One of these, the £460 million Mersey Gateway Bridge, opened in 2017, providing quick access between the Wirral and nearby cities of Liverpool and Warrington. This is just one of the many investments made by the local government in recent years, allowing commuters and businesses to access the Wirral more easily.

As well as being one of the ten county boroughs in the UK, the Wirral is home to a wide variety of cultural events. These range from the annual Wirral International Jazz & Blues Festival, to the eagerly anticipated Wirral Food and Drink Festival. This six day event, set in Birkenhead Park, showcases local producers, fine dining restaurants and caf culture.

The Wirral also has an incredible history and is home to many tourist attractions, including the Espresso Library. Formerly the home of the Lever Brothers, this Grade II listed manor house is located in the district of West Kirby and boasts a historical Victorian interior.

The Wirral is a great place for the car, finance and motorsport industries and its future is bright. A combination of innovative developments, its growing financial sector, educated population and stunning local surroundings, make it a desirable location for businesses to thrive and people to enjoy. The Wirral is indeed a hidden gem of the UK, one that is just waiting to be discovered.
