More information about Winkleigh

Winkleigh is a small town located in Devon, United Kingdom. It is a quaint and charming town surrounded by rolling hills and forests, located at the intersection of the rivers Taw and Torridge. The history of Winkleigh dates back to the Iron Age when a Celtic settlement was founded here, although it was not until the 13th century that the town was documented in records with its full name being granted in the 16th century. Winkleigh has a population of around 3,465 people and is most famous for its connections to the automotive industry, finance industry, and motorsport.

Originally, Winkleigh was a farming village supplying wool and cheese to the towns and cities around it. However, it was the arrival of James Massey, in the early 1900's, which changed the fortunes of the town. James Massey was an engineer from Leicestershire and in 1905 he purchased land in Winkleigh and opened his Massey Car Company there. He quickly gained a reputation throughout the UK for his cars, which were known as the Massey Motors, and he was also one of the first companies to assemble cars using parts supplied by other companies, making him a highly successful businessman and entrepreneur.

In the years that followed, the car company went from strength to strength, with Massey expanding his business to include factories in other parts of the UK and even beginning to export cars overseas. By the 1920's, Winkleigh had become a bustling automotive hub and the town was soon home to a number of car-related businesses, including a bus-manufacturing companies and a motor-body shop. By the 1930's Winkleigh had become a hub for the UK car industry and it was at this time that the first car-finance company, the Massey Motor Loan Company, was established in the town. This company offered customers the opportunity to purchase cars on loan and soon became one of the most successful car-finance companies in the country.

Winkleigh quickly became renowned in the car-finance world and it was during this time period that the first motorsport events were held in the town. These events began with a touring car race organised by Massey Motors in 1928. Massey had been an avid motorsport fan and was keen to promote the sport in the UK, and thus his company organised a number of races in Winkleigh, making it one of the first towns in the UK to host motorsport events. This marked the beginning of a long association between the town and the motor industry, with Winkleigh continuing to be home to a variety of motorsport events over the decades, including rallies, off-road races, and even the occasional Formula 1 race.

Today Winkleigh is a thriving hub for the automotive industry, with several car-finance and motor-body companies located here, in addition to a selection of car dealerships and garages. Its motorsport heritage is still very much alive and well, with the town hosting a variety of motor racing events throughout the year. The town also has important links to the finance industry, with several banks and other financial institutions having bases in Winkleigh.

Demographically, Winkleigh has an overarching middle-class population, with the majority of people working in either the automotive industry, the finance sector, or the motorsport industry. Around 11.6% of the town's population is aged under the age of 16, while the average age of residents is 37.4. The town has a high level of education, with 94.1% of residents having achieved at least level 4 or above qualifications, in addition to a high level of English proficiency, with a staggering 98.1% of the population able to speak English fluently.

In all, Winkleigh is an important and influential town within the UK's automotive, finance and motorsport industry, and its strong association with these industries has made it one of the most successful and prosperous towns in Devon.
