More information about Widnes

Introduction

Widnes is a town located in the north-west of England within the Unitary Borough of Halton. It sits on the banks of the River Mersey and is situated approximately nine miles to the east of the city of Liverpool and four miles east of the town of Runcorn.

Historically, Widnes has been known for its industrial background, having a long history of salt manufacturing, brick making and steelworks as a part of its economy. In the 21st century, it has made a transformation into a vibrant multicultural town, with a big presence in the automotive, finance and motorsport industries.

Geography and demographics

Located within the Borough of Halton and in the ceremonial county of Cheshire, Widnes is located at the centre of various towns and cities within the north-west of England with excellent connections to the motorway network, being only two miles away from junction 7 of the M62 motorway, providing efficient connections to other parts of the UK. It has a population of just under 37,500 people, with a median age of 38 and a majority of the population being of white ethnicity.

History

The first recorded settlement of Widnes is thought to have been in 1053, where it was known as 'Witheney', meaning 'the clearing belonging to Wita'. As the manufacturing industry developed in the region during the industrial revolution, Widnes saw a rapid expansion in population and the economy, becoming home to a number of chemical works and factories. These included a steelworks, a brickworks, a soap works and a glass works, which all provided employment to the locals. These industries are still present today, though the majority are no longer active.

Throughout the 20th century, Widnes saw further industrial development in the form of light engineering, chemicals and transport. This saw the establishment of companies such as ICI, Austin Rover and BLMC.

Car industry & finance

The car industry has been a large blessing and curse to the town of Widnes over the years. Car firms like ICI, Austin Rover and BLMC were founded in Widnes and helped to boost the economy significantly. However, the collapse of firms such as Rover in 2005 caused huge job losses within the town.

Despite this, Widnes is once again a major centre for the automotive industry, being home to the Autoline Group, one of the largest independent car service and repair companies in the North West and a franchised dealership for Volvo, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Abarth. The company, which was launched in 1981, claims to have sold over 50,000 cars since its inception and services, services over 15,000 customers each year.

The finance industry has also become increasingly important in Widnes over the years and is an important part of the town's economy. This sector is now dominated by the likes of Wonga, a short term online loan provider and the United Trust Bank, an independent banking group. This sector has been growing in Widnes and the wider region with ongoing investment by the likes of Santander, who opened a regional headquarters in the Widnes Business Centre.

Motorsport

Widnes is also deeply connected to motorsport. The track at Three Sisters Racing Circuit, just outside of Widnes, was the home of the British Superbike Championship for two decades and continues to host various race events. It has also been the venue for numerous movies and television shows, such as the 2010 hit film 'Fast and Furious 6'.

In addition to this, Widnes has a thriving motorcycle culture, with a number of motorcycle clubs and events taking place throughout the year, such as the British Championship Speedway and the British Motorcycle Racing Association — events which attract riders from all over the region.

Conclusion

Widnes is an important part of the north-west England area, being a major hub for the automotive, finance and motorsport industries. It has a long and varied history and a population of over 37,500 individuals. It has experienced a significant transformation in recent years, with its economy adapting to the 21st century with investment in the car repair, money lending, finance and motorsport sectors. As such, Widnes is an important part of the region's economy and will no doubt continue to grow and thrive in the years to come.
