More information about Welling

The town of Welling, a suburb in the London Borough of Bexley, lies about 14 kilometres southeast of Charing Cross, at the south of the River Thames. It has a population of about 40,000 and is known for the car industry, finance industry and motorsport that are deeply rooted in the area.

The Car Industry

Welling's car industry began in the 1960s when the General Motors Hydramatic division (GMH) became the largest employer in the area. At its peak, it employed more than 1,000 people in the design, research, development and production of cutting-edge hydraulic transmission products. As well as being responsible for the production of the popular Hydramatic transmission, GMH developed the first electronically-controlled six-speed car transmission. This technology was adopted by leading car manufacturers including BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

The site was eventually sold to the Philips Car Components division, before being taken over by the French-based company Valeo in 2000. Valeo continued to develop cutting-edge automotive components for various car manufacturers, and today the site is known as Valeo Classics.

The Finance Industry

Welling is well known for its finance industry, which began in the late 1960s. This was when the then High Street bank, Lloyds, established its flagship Welling office. Today, the Lloyds Bank in Welling is one of the most well-known financial institutions in the area. Other big names in finance include HSBC, Barclays, NatWest and Santander, all of which maintain a sizeable presence in the town.

In addition to its regional finance companies, Welling is home to one of the largest independentfinancial services companies in Europe. This company, which is called King and Co Wealth Management, provides financial advice and services to over 35,500 clients.

The Motorsports Industry

The motorsports industry in Welling began in the mid-1980s when the area was chosen as the site of the Brands Hatch circuit. Since then, it has become a major destination for motorsport events, hosting races for several British Touring Car Championship and Le Mans Endurance Championship rounds. Welling is also home to an extensive karting centre and numerous speedways, making it a popular destination for both professional and amateur racers alike.

Demographics

Welling's population consists of mainly white Britons, with a few Asian and Afro-Caribbean minorities. The population of Welling is quite evenly distributed among all age groups, but it is slightly dominated by people in the 25 to 49 age range, with a median age of 37. The majority of Welling's population is employed in professional occupations such as finance, education and healthcare.
