More information about Swanscombe

Introduction

Swanscombe is a small town situated in Kent, England. It is located between Gravesend and Dartford, on the banks of the River Thames Estuary. Swanscombe is a quiet and peaceful place, surrounded by a beautiful countryside, and a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Although it may not seem like it to the untrained eye, Swanscombe opens up a wealth of opportunities for those looking for a career in the car industry, finance industry or motorsport.

Swanscombe and the Car Industry

Swanscombe has been at the heart of the car industry since the early 1900s when, in 1908, Herbert Austin opened the Swanscombe Motor Works. This was one of the earliest motor works and was the birthplace of the Austin 12/4, which became the first mass-produced British car. The swanscombe Motor Works was a major manufacturer of cars, producing tens of thousands of vehicles, and even supplying the Royal Family.

Since the Swanscombe Motor Works' closure in 1972, Swanscombe has become a haven for car enthusiasts. The area has hosted some of the biggest car events in the UK, including the Swanscombe Hot Rod Convention, sponsored by JAE, and London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, as well as being home to a number of used car dealerships and independent car repair businesses.

In addition, Swanscombe is home to several world-renowned car factories and manufacturing plants. Ford, for instance, has had a presence in Swanscombe since it opened the Dagenham Car Assembly Plant in 1931. The plant has since been refurbished and now manufactures cars for the European market, including the Fiesta, Mondeo and Transit commercial van. Elsewhere in Swanscombe, the Nissan UK Technical Centre is located near the centre of town. Here, highly-skilled engineers develop new trends and technologies in order to keep Nissan at the forefront of the car industry.

Swanscombe and the Finance Industry

Swanscombe is also home to a number of financial institutions, including two major banks. The largest of these is the NatWest Bank, located near the centre of Swanscombe, which has been serving the local community since the early 1970s. The bank provides a wide range of services, from personal banking to business banking and wealth management. NatWest also operates an ATM in the centre of the town and has a range of branches in the surrounding villages.

Another financial institution located in Swanscombe is the Swanscombe Credit Union, which was established in 1975. The credit union provides financial services to the local community and offers a range of savings and loan products, as well as financial advice. The credit union is supported by the Kent Savers Cooperative Network and is a member of the Association of British Credit Unions Limited (ABCUL).

Swanscombe and Motorsport

It is not just the car and finance industries that have adopted Swanscombe as their home — motorsport has, too. The town is home to multiple motorsport events, from drag racing to rallycross. Most of the events are held at the Swanscombe Speedbowl, built in 1952, which is the longest-established motorsport venue in the UK. The speedbowl has seen its fair share of world-famous drivers and cars, from lovelaces and dragsters to touring cars and Formula One race cars.

In addition to providing a venue for motorsport, Swanscombe is also home to a number of motorsport associated businesses. This includes a race car manufacturing and servicing facility, a tyre fitting and retreading service, as well as an auto upholstery facility and a car paint shop.

Demographics

Swanscombe has a population of around 14,000 people, according to the most recent census (2011). The population is predominantly white British, however, there is a small minority of other nationalities, including Eastern Europeans, African Caribbean and South Asian groups.

Residents of Swanscombe are well educated, with a large proportion of the population being graduates. A quarter of the population is employed in professional or managerial jobs and a further 11% is employed in skilled trades, including construction and engineering. In terms of income, Swanscombe is relatively affluent, with average house prices at around £288,000.

With a population of 14,000, mostly white British people, Swanscombe is a diverse and affluent area, and a great place to live.
