More information about Rochford

Rochford is a town located in the English county of Essex in the United Kingdom. It is situated on the south bank of the River Thames, a few miles west of Southend-on-Sea. Rochford has a history stretching back to Roman times, when it was the site of a settlement known as Redena, located between the towns of Maldon and Tilbury. It is today a relatively small community in size, with a population of just over 19,000 people.

Rochford's more recent history starts with the arrival of the railways in 1884 when it became a junction between the Southend and London railway lines. This resulted in the area's population growing from 2,688 in 1881 to 6,571 by 1911. Since then, the population of Rochford has grown almost steadily and as at the 2011 census, stood at 19,343 with a range of age brackets. The largest age group in the town is between 30 to 44 years old which accounts for 28% of the population.

The presence of the railway station saw a number of businesses spring up in the late 19th century including a number of banks, saw mills and engineering firms. In 1907 the Essex Motor Company set up its factory at Rochford which contributed to the town's development as a centre for automotive manufacturing, finance and motorsport. The factory initially focussed on producing cars and trucks, but during the First World War, it turned its attention to military vehicles. The factory remained active until it was closed down in 1957.

Rochford also established a reputation as a centre for finance and banking after two major banks were set up in the town in the late 19th century. These banks, the National Provincial Bank and the London, East and South Eastern Bank, not only provided banking and finance services to the local community but also served as major employers in the area.

Despite the closure of the Essex Motor Company in 1957, Rochford remains a significant centre for the automotive industry. The town is home to a variety of independent garages and automotive businesses, including a Formula One racing car preparation centre, a prestigious motorsport engineering company and a specialist centre for restoring vintage cars.

Rochford also hosts a number of well-attended events throughout the year that celebrate both the history of the town and its connections to the motor industry. These include the Rochford Classic Car Show and Rally, held annually since 1987. This event brings together classic and vintage cars from around the country and is supported by local investments, banks and insurance companies.

In recent years, Rochford has become increasingly attractive to tourists and visitors due to the presence of the St George's Shopping Centre. The centre opened in 1996 and was the first mall of its kind in Essex. It is home to a variety of shopping outlets and restaurants and also houses a 9-screen multiplex cinema.

Despite its modest size, Rochford is an important centre for automotive and finance industries within the UK. The town has a long and significant history of involvement in the car industry, both as an employer and in exporting cars and components around the world. The presence of the St George's Shopping Centre and a number of popular vintage car shows have made Rochford an increasingly attractive destination, providing visitors with a glimpse of its automobile and financial heritage.
