More information about Prenton

Introduction

Nestled on the Wirral Peninsula, just across the Mersey River from Liverpool, lies Prenton, an affluent suburban area of the United Kingdom. Prenton forms one of the five towns that comprise the borough of Wirral, along with Birkenhead, Wallasey, Heswall, and Bebington. The area lies largely within the boundaries of the historic county of Cheshire, yet its charm lies in its mixture of modern and traditional identity, positioned at the heart of a vibrant northern city.

Whilst Prenton is perhaps best known today as an affluent residential area — with an abundance of green spaces, parks and leisure facilities — the area has an interesting past, which is closely associated with the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. Indeed, Prenton has strong connections to these industries, which date back to the late 19th century.

Car Industry

Whilst the modern day car industry may be more synonymous places such as Detroit and Vienna, transport was a key part of the motor industry in Prenton in the late Victorian era. At this time, the area was the home of the Prenton Motor Works, which was established in 1890. The Motors Works operated as part of the Tranmere Motor & Engineering Company, which produced cars and supplies from the local populace as well as for global use.

The factory used a mixture of steam engines and internal combustion engines, foreshadowing the advent of the motor car. Not only did the Motor Works create products for the local population and international clients, but they also sponsored local automobile clubs and events. This helped set the foundations of the area's connections to motorsport, which remain integral to Prenton today.

Finance Industry

As the car industry flourished in Prenton, so too did the finance industry. The City Banking Company was founded in 1894 in Prenton, emerging from the financial investments of local entrepreneurs. The bank provided the local community with a range of banking services, and would eventually grow to become one of the most important financial institutions in the region.

It was the City Banking Company that provided the capital that enabled local inventor, William Foster, to create the electric tramway system in 1920. This provided Prenton with electric public transport and enabled the area to expand its connections to neighbouring towns. The bank also sponsored local events and provided funding for local schools and charities, creating valuable links between the financial and social sectors in the region.

Motorsport

Prenton is closely associated with motorsport. The village is the birthplace of multiple drivers including 1912 Grand Prix winner Ralph DePalma and record breaker Eddie Lowden. More recently, motorsport celebrities such as Lewis Hamilton and Lewis Williamson have called Prenton their home.

Motorsport has always been closely associated with the area, with the first motor racing event taking place in Prenton in 1902. This tradition was carried on in the 1920s when the Wirral Automobile Club was founded. The club was established by the motorsport enthusiasts of Prenton, who wanted to promote the attraction and safety of the sport, something which remains paramount in the town today.

Prenton has two motor racing tracks located in the area — the oval East Prenton Circuit and West Prenton Circuit, which is a road course. Both tracks centre around the Prenton Park, a large park located in the south of the town. The East Prenton Circuit first opened in 1950 and continues to host events today such as car and motorcycle racing and go-karting. The West Prenton Circuit, meanwhile, was first opened in 1953 and is used for the same purpose.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, Prenton has a population of 11,102 - a figure which is thought to have grown since the time of the census. The majority of the population is of white British origin (96.9%), with very few other ethnic groups represented. The area is an affluent one, with a higher than average level of homeownership and average house prices in 2017 being £271,265. The unemployment rate is also low, at 3.4%, and most residents are in full-time employment.

Conclusion

Prenton is an affluent area of northern England, located on the Wirral Peninsula. Despite its quiet, suburban feel, it has a wealth of interesting history, which is particularly linked to the motor industry, financial sector and motorsport. From the origins of the motorcar industry in the late 19th century to modern-day motorsport events, Prenton has made a significant contribution to these industries. Moreover, its demographics also reflect an area of high economic standing, with few unemployment figures and a low proportion of ethnic minorities. All of these factors demonstrate Prenton's strong ties to the car industry, finance industry, and motorsport, making it the ideal destination for motorists and lovers of motorsport.
