More information about Mexborough

Introduction

Set in the heart of South Yorkshire, the town of Mexborough has become increasingly recognised by its strong industrial ties to the car and finance industries, as well as motorsport. With humble beginnings as a farming village and then a small, affluent merchant community in the 19th century, Mexborough has since become a prosperous hub of economic activity and a bustling settlement of trade and commerce.

With a population of around 17,400, Mexborough is now the largest town in the borough of Doncaster, which also contains the towns of Conisbrough, Denaby Main, Edlington and Thorne. Despite being officially listed as part of the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, Mexborough has worked diligently to create its own identity and culture, standing out from many of the nearby villages and towns. In recent years Mexborough has seen an influx in investment and development, helping to drive the town across numerous industries and sectors.

Car Industry

Throughout its history, Mexborough has long been a hub of activity for both car production and servicing within the region. In 1950 the first National Coal Board built service and repair facility was installed in the town, becoming known as Mex Mechanical Engineering. By the 1960s the company had started to specialise in the development and repair of heavy-duty vehicles, eventually becoming the featured point for heavy motor work for the Yorkshire area.

In 1976, the renowned prestige car dealership Bramall & Jones moved its operations to Mexborough. The company established itself as one of the most respected dealerships in the town, specialising in the sale and servicing of executive and luxury vehicles from around the world. Following the relocation, the company began to expand rapidly, and soon enough Mexborough had become the premier destination for drivers looking for exclusive brands of cars.

In recent years the car industry in Mexborough has grown exponentially. With the emergence of foreign companies such as Mitsubishi, Peugeot, Citroen and Jeep, the town now offers a variety of new and used car dealerships, as well as mechanics and garages specialising in the repair and maintenance of all make and models.

Finance Industry

With its strong connections to the car industry and a rapidly growing population, Mexborough naturally turned its attention to the finance sector. In 1984, The Mexborough Building Society opened its doors, offering services such as mortgages, unsecured personal loans and insurance services. It didn't take long for the company to make significant progress, rapidly expanding its services to cover a wide range of finance related requirements.

The Mexborough Building Society merged with the Derbyshire Building Society in 2004, becoming one of the largest building societies in the country. With the union came a new wave of financial freedom and opportunities. Today, the company employs over 1100 people and boasts a network of more than 100 branches, branches located all around the United Kingdom.

In addition to the Building Society, Mexborough is also home to two credit unions. The first is the Mexborough & District Credit Union, which has been offering financial advice, services and products since its formation by volunteers in 1982. The other is the Mexborough and District Community Support Agency Credit Union, a not-for-profit organisation and part of the Government approved Community Development Finance Initiative (CDFI).

Motorsport

While the automotive and finance industries have traditionally been the driving force behind Mexborough's economy, the town has also seen an emergence of motorsport in recent years. Two of the most prominent fixtures in the town are the Pipesmoke Speedway, an RC racing track which opened in 2017, and The Motorplex, a purpose-built 1.2K indoor driving track, open to the public since 2019.

The Motorplex has since received rave reviews from both the racing community and casual spectators. Whether it is hosting its popular go-karting days, using its daily qualifiers race to hone in emerging talent or allowing visitors to experience the thrill of the track for leisure, the venue is certainly putting Mexborough on the map as an easily accessible and vibrant motorsport hotspot.

Demographics

According to the 2021 census data, Mexborough has a strong and diverse population with a majority of those over the age of 16 in employment, education or training.

Jews, Hindus and Sikhs make up a significant part of the ethnic composition of the town, accounting for approximately 8.3% of the total population. As expected of a population centre in the United Kingdom, English remains the most widely spoken language in Mexico, spoken by 98.4% of the population.

Conclusion

As a bustling town in the borough of Doncaster, Mexborough has a rich history of industry and progress. From its foundations as a farming village to its current success as a centre of car manufacturing and finance, the town continues to grow and prosper. In recent times the arrival of motorsport venues has helped put Mexborough on the map and adds to the range of activities and services already offered by the town. With a booming population and a variety of businesses, Mexborough and its residents look forward to a successful and promising future.
