More information about Hoddesdon

Introduction

Hoddesdon is a small town in the Norfolk Broads area of the United Kingdom located near both Norwich and Cambridge. With a population of around 23,000 and a history that goes back centuries, it is an industrial and commercial hub with a deep-rooted connection to the car industry, finance industry, and motorsport. As such, it has been the centre point for considerable economic growth and social development for the entire region.

History

Hoddesdon dates back to the 11th century when it was first recorded in the Domesday Book, however, it was not until the 1400s that its importance in the region was established. A Roman road stretching to nearby Norwich passed alongside the town and in 1422 the Market Charter granted by Henry VI brought with it both financial prosperity and the beginnings of industry.

The 1800s saw further growth when the London to Cambridge railway went through the town and by 1801 the population had risen to nearly 3,000. This was further boosted by a branch success of the neighbouring Elsenham railway and with it the coming of the East Hertfordshire Railway, which extended from Hertford to Bowes Park in 1886.

The Car Industry and Motorsport

The car industry has long held a fascination for Hoddesdon, going back over a century. In 1900, local entrepreneur Henry Lofts and his wife developed an internal combustion engine powered three wheeled car called the Lofts Autocar which was much ahead of its time for its reliability. Lofts achieved remarkable success with it, winning various races and even registering a speed of 25MPH at a time when most other cars could barely manage 10MPH, a record which remained unbroken until the mid-1920's.

The Lofts Autocar was soon followed by other models such as the Lofts' Roadster and the Hoddesdon Electricar, with the latter playing a major role in making the town an automotive cluster. By the mid-1920's there were three car manufacturers operating in Hoddesdon - Lofts, Johnson and Waite - and together they created the automotive industry which the town still compliments today. Their cars were primarily used for racing, with Lofts able to claim a number of major wins under his belt, including the 1927 British Grand Prix.

The Finance Industry

In recent years, the finance industry has placed itself firmly in the area with its many firms setting up offices in the town. It continues to be a major part of Hoddesdon's economy, supporting both the automotive and motorsport sectors. The local banking sector has grown exponentially in recent years, with the Hoddesdon branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland making a particular impact. A number of independent financial advisers, account managers and mortgage brokers have "grabbed hold" of the area, creating an increasingly monetary savvy population and providing businesses with a well-informed customer base.

Demographics

The total population of Hoddesdon, as figured by the 2011 census, is approximately 23,000, with a gender split of approximately 48.3% male and 51.7% female. Approximately 73.6% of the population identify as British, with the remaining 26.4% a mix of other European and Asian nationalities. The average age of residents is 37.7 and the largest age bracket is the 35-44 year olds at 27.7%.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of businesses located in Hoddesdon as a result of the growth of the finance and automotive sectors.

Conclusion

Hoddesdon has come a long way from its beginnings as an 11th-century market town and today is a bustling industrial and commercial hub where the automotive, finance and motorsport industries have come together to create a vibrant and prosperous community. The town's population is well-educated and diverse, with a wide range of businesses located nearby.
