The industrial development of Dunfermline
Dunfermline has a long and impressive history when it comes to industry, particularly in the automotive and finance industries. In the 19th century, Dunfermline produced cloth, sailcloth, and linen, and was home to a large trading port. But the industrial development of the city began in earnest when the Dunfermline Building Society was founded in 1845. Not long after, in 1902, the car industry took root when William Beardmore & Co. Ltd. opened its first car plant, producing cars known as "Beardmores". This plant went on to become one of the city's most important employers.
In 1922, William Beardmore & Co. was dissolved and sold to Chrysler, who continued the car production that had been established earlier on. This included the production of cars for the British Army during the Second World War, as well as manufacturing for Peugeot and Vauxhall.
In 1955, Chrysler was sold to Rootes Group, who began producing a variety of cars in the Dunfermline plant, including the iconic Hillman Imp. Finally, in 1967, the Dunfermline plant was sold to General Motors, who continued car production until the plant shut down in 1980.
However, the automotive manufacturing industry did not disappear from the city. In 2002, Morgan Motorcars established a factory in Dunfermline, producing their classic sports cars. The factory closed down in 2009, but automobile production continues in the city in the form of the Edinburgh-based motor industry firm, Kennedy International Motors.

It was the first building society to be incorporated by Royal Charter, and at its peak had a membership of over 600,000 people.
