More information about Carluke

Introduction

Carluke is a Scottish town in South Lanarkshire, around 37 miles southeast of Glasgow. It is located at the point where the River Clyde and River Avon meet and is bordered by the towns of Douglas, Forth, and Blackwood. The town is believed to have been founded by the Celts, however, its origins may lay with the Roman Empire, given that numerous coins and masonry have been found nearby.

Carluke has long been connected to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the town was home to numerous coal mines, an iron foundry and farm improvements, including ploughs, churns and other implements, as well as building carts and wagons.

Car Industry

The first motor manufacturer in Carluke was established in 1905. This was the Waikley Car Company, set up by Mr. Arthur Waikley, and pioneers in the car industry. Waikley's first creation was the Model T, a small, light car that ran on a single-cylinder petrol engine basked within a pressed steel frame. His models were extremely popular, particularly within Scotland.

The car industry flourished in Carluke during the years before World War II, with the likes of the Trojan, Austin, Morris and Armstrong Siddeley all having a manufacturing base in the town. All of these companies left Carluke following the war and in the 1950s, Carluke's main factory, Fernilee, was converted to make washing machines, refrigerators, and other home furnishings.

Today, Carluke is home to the Thompson Motor Vehicles (TMV) factory and showroom, one of the largest parts suppliers in the area. It is responsible for assembling Renault and Volvo cars, as well as outsourcing components for a number of other car makes. It also has a manufacturing base in Carluke where it produces axle parts for Volvo trucks and buses.

Finance Industry

Carluke is very much linked to the finance industry, with a number of banks having branches in the town centre. These include Halifax, Barclays, Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Santander. Carluke also has an HSBC Bank and a Bank of Ireland office.

In recent years, Carluke has also become closely linked to the photovoltaic (solar) energy industry. The town boasts a number of solar panel installations, as well as a large number of businesses and residences taking advantage of the government's Feed in Tariff (FiT) Scheme.

Motorsport

Carluke's association with motorsport is something that dates back to the 1950s. In 1956, the Scottish Motor Racing Club was started and the first event was organised at the Carluke circuit. The track was located on the outskirts of the town and consisted of a 0.7-mile oval with a banked corner. Numerous meetings were held here and it quickly became one of the most popular destinations on the UK motorsport calendar.

Sadly, the track was closed in the early 60s and sadly, no trace of it remains today. However, Carluke is still closely linked with the sport, with a number of race team garages and workshops in the town, as well as a number of drivers that come from the area.

Population

Carluke currently has a population of around 8,900 people. It is a predominantly White British town, with a majority British nationality of 94%. This is much higher than the Scotland and South Lanarkshire averages of 86% and 88% respectively.

Carluke is also home to a small percentage of the Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) population, with those from Asian backgrounds (3.1%), followed by African (1.1%), Mixed (0.7%) and Chinese (0.5%) backgrounds.

The majority of the people in Carluke come from working-class backgrounds, with 68% of the population declaring this in the 2011 Census. This is higher than the Scottish average of 57%.
