More information about Bridgend

Bridgend: A Town with Racing in Its Veins

Bridgend is a Welsh market town located near the southern coast of Wales. It's a thriving community and is well known for its connections to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport. This article will explore these connections, as well as some demographic information relating to the area.

The Car Industry

Bridgend has had strong links with the car industry since the early 20th century. One of the town's earliest companies was the motor vehicle manufacturer known as Roberts Limited, which was established in 1908. In 1912, the company was acquired by Singer Motor Company, which were then taken over by the Rootes Group in 1935, who established their manufacturing plant at the village of Coity, just outside Bridgend. The Rootes Group are best known for the production of the Hillman, Sunbeam and Commer vehicles, as well as being one of the first companies to produce car engines capable of running on unleaded petrol.

In 1972, the Rootes Group was bought by the US-based Chrysler Corporation, who then began to manufacture minivans, pick-up trucks and sport utility vehicles at their Bridgend plant. In 2003, the plant was closed down due to a decline in sales, making it one of the last car manufacturers in Wales.

The Finance Industry

In recent years, Bridgend has become increasingly known for its links to the finance industry. The town is home to a number of financial services firms such as accountancy and chartered surveyors Darby and Emery, as well as asset management specialist Orchard Financial Partners. The economic importance of these firms to the local area has been recognised by the Welsh Government who, in 2012, made Bridgend the centre of Wales' fintech, or financial technology, industry.

Motorsport

Bridgend's long-standing connections to the car industry have also led to a vibrant motorsport scene in the town. In 1932, the Grand Prix circuit at Monmouth Park in Bridgend was opened, making it the first purpose-built race track in the UK. Monmouth Park and its associated circuits, such as Rhedynog-fig and Porthderien, were home to some of the country's most famous races during the 1930s and 1940s, including the Welsh Empire Trophy, the Welsh E.T.C. and the RAC Welsh Trophy.

Today, there are several active motorsport clubs in Bridgend, most notably the Bridgend Motor Club, which was founded in 1946. The club run several race series throughout the year, including their flagship event: the Bridgend Open, which has been held annually since 2006.

Demographics

The population of Bridgend is estimated to be 44,996 according to the most recent Census. The town has a multicultural population, with the largest minorities being of Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin.

The median age in Bridgend is 39, with the town having both a higher than average population of pensioners and a slightly lower than average population of young people. In terms of education, the majority of the population have attained a degree or higher qualification, although there is still a proportion of the population without any formal qualifications.

Conclusion

It is clear that Bridgend has strong ties to the car industry, finance industry and motorsport, making it a unique place to live and work. With its vibrant multicultural population and high education attainment, it is a great place for businesses to set up and for individuals to pursue their dreams.
