More information about Hockley

Hockley

Hockley is an area of Birmingham, in the West Midlands rural county of Herefordshire, in the United Kingdom. It is located near the Black Country Living Museum and the Motor Heritage Centre, and its history is closely intertwined with the automotive, financial, and motorsport industries. The history of Hockley is a vibrant testimony to the resilience of the human spirit and its ability to make something special out of the most challenging circumstances.

Automotive Industry

Hockley's most prominent industry, and one that has been a mainstay throughout its history, has been automotive production. In the 19th century, Hockley became home to a number of automobile factories, each offering employment to local workers. The first was the Albion Motor Company, founded in 1895. This was followed by the Austin Motor Company in 1905, Vauxhall Motors in 1911, and the Rootes Group in 1953.

The area was heavily damaged during the Second World War, but the factories quickly recovered, producing the Hillman Avenger, Hunter and Husky, Rootes Group's Sunbeam Tiger, Vauxhall Viva and VX 4/90 and Austin's Maxi, to name just a few. In the subsequent decades, the factories came and went, but automotive production has remained a major part of the local economy.

Today, the area still has strong ties to the automotive industry, with a number of automotive suppliers still based in and around Hockley. High-end vehicle manufacturer AP Racing is based in Hockley, and has been since the late-1970s. The company produces brakes and other precision parts, such as pistons, crankshafts, cylinder heads, and more, and is renowned for its involvement in various motorsport series.

Financial Industry

Hockley has always been an important centre of finance and banking in the UK. Its proximity to the City of London and its role as a hub of automotive production made it an ideal home for the early banks and financial institutions. In the 19th century, London & County Bank, the Bank of England, and Lloyds Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland and Barclays all had branches in the Hockley area.

Today, Hockley boasts a number of financial institutions offering banking, savings, loans and other financial services. These include Barclays, H&T Financial Group, and Royal Bank of Scotland.

Motorsport

Hockley has had a long relationship with the motorsport industry. Its proximity to the historic Silverstone circuit, along with its automotive heritage, made it the ideal place to develop performance-focused car parts, such as brakes and suspension components. AP Racing, as mentioned above, is heavily involved in the motorsport industry, and the company has produced parts for the likes of Alpine, Bentley, Bugatti, Ferrari, Pagani and Lamborghini.

Demography

According to the 2011 census, the population of Hockley is 7,931. The average age is 36.7, with 14.3% aged between 16 and 24, 44.7% aged between 25 and 44, and 30.4% aged 45 or over. 27.4% of residents are single, 45.2% are married and 12.4% are divorced. The area is ethnically diverse, with 91.0% of the population identifying as White, and the remaining 9.0% identifying as Black, Asian, and Other. The majority of those employed in the area are employed in manufacturing, finance, and banking.
